March 2013

Trees and woods are under increasing pressure, especially from pests and diseases, so there are plenty of challenges for the UK’s Tree Wardens as guardians of their local trees.

It won’t be long before ash leaves begin to appear, and Tree Wardens can play a vital role in the fight back against the chalara fungus by identifying and reporting any new symptoms of ash dieback to the Forestry Commission (see Technical Update). It’s an important part of the Tree Care Campaign message.

And with a new public body to look after our national woods and forests now firmly on the cards, Tree Wardens should not be afraid to send their views on how it should work to the Secretary of State for the Environment.

Tree Wardens across London have volunteered to be part of a project to value the capital’s trees.

New county forums

Hertfordshire and Gloucestershire Tree Wardens, backed by The Tree Council, are leading the way in an experiment – to hold county forums this spring and summer. These will be in addition to the annual regional events in the autumn.

The Tree Council is part of a stakeholder group being consulted on what the UK’s new forestry body should look like.

Photo awards highlight woods

Wild Woods form one of the categories in this year’s £20,000 British Wildlife Photography Awards, which have a closing date for entries of 4th May.

The Tree Council is offering support for orchard planting through its new Orchard Windfalls Fund. The closing date to apply for these and other Tree Futures grants – Trees for Schools and Trees for Communities – is 30th April 2013.
