Keeping traditions alive – Priors Hill Copse, Butlocks Heath Since they formed in July 2008 the Friends of Priors Hill Copse have been busy working on restoration of this ancient woodland beauty spot. The centre of the copse is being returned to a traditional system of coppicing but the whole copse is being opened up carefully and gradually to allow in more light and warmth. The friends work with the agreement and support of Hound Parish Council who own that part of the woodland under management (there are some areas privately owned which are not managed by the friends group). Bluebells, Wood Anemones colourful fungi and butterflies are in abundance and proudly on show at different times of the year. On the 26th March 2012 trees felled, as part of the management programme, were dragged out of the copse by heavy horse, which was quite a treat and spectacle for the local community.
The 1st July 2012 there’s another opportunity for the Friends of Priors Hill Copse to proudly show off to the local community what has been achieved by woodland management in those areas owned by Hound Parish Council. There are still some unmanaged areas so any visitors on the day can get a sense of ‘before and after.’ All are welcome to come along and enjoy the day. Meet at the entrance to Hound Parish Hall, Woolston Road, Butlocks Heath at 10:00 am. We are pleased to say that our celebrity speaker Jon Stokes (Operations Director - Tree Council) will act as our guide, taking everyone around and giving lots of interesting information about trees and plants. Following on from Jon’s tour, if the weather permits we'll have refreshments in the copse with tea, coffee, cakes etc. Why not make a date in your diary now?
