This year I am making Flower of the month different I will be writing about the wildflowers I am trying to grow. these will be plug plants for 2 projects I am involved with this year. They will be Foxglove Digitalis, Mallow Malva sylvestris. Field Scabious Knautia arvensis. Yellow Rattle Rhinanthus minor. You can follow the process from sowing to planting if everything goes to plan. I have created a seed cage from a dog cage to protect the seeds while stratifying from my garden birds.
All the seeds have been sown in a peat free compost some in large cells and some in plug plant cells which I am trying for the first time. The Yellow Rattle were sown in late November due to them requiring a long cold spell to help germination, the rest were sown in January.
This is a erect stiff-stemmed plant which is semi-parasitic on the roots of grass and various herbs. This plant can be considered a coloniser due to it weakening grass and allowing other plants to move in. The dark green leaves are coarsely tooth and unstalked. The flowers borne in leafy spikes are yellow the fruit capsule contains many seeds which become loose and rattle.
